Phonics
Phonics associates the letters of the alphabet and their sounds. Research has shown that a strong grasp of phonics provides considerable help for children to learn to read. That is because the sounds letters make are the building blocks of words. For example, by combining the sounds made by the letters c, a and t, children can read the word "cat". When children learn to recognise letter sounds and combine them to read words, they are developing important reading skills.
New readers also need the opportunity to read and understand books. Reading books successfully can inspire children to learn more new reading skills. That is why it is essential to provide children with fun stories that they can read at each level of their reading development.
This course combines comprehensive skill-building activities with stories, games and built-in incentives along the way, providing a balanced "learn to read" experience.

Inspirational!
Enthralling!
Entertaining!
We believe that learning to read should be a series of exciting adventures starting with phonics, and opening up the wonderful world of imagination by reading, understanding and enjoying books and stories. The children practice the skills that help them become readers throughout the adventure, building up their confidence and increasing their ability.
This course starts by preparing for the adventure by teaching letter names. From here the children start to build on their basic skills by learning letter sounds. They then consolidate their skills by combining those sounds to read words. And so they take the first step of their journey. As the children put those words together to read and understand sentences, Phonicfriend moves them on to reading appropriate stories for their new reading level. Children foster a love of reading when they can successfully read and understand stories.
The adventure continues as the children learn to read increasingly complex sounds, words and sentences. With each new, more challenging combination of sounds, children learn more complex words and how to put those words together in sentences and in books. This motivates them to continue reading.
The Phonicfriend reading course is designed to take your child through the reading adventure at his or her own pace. So whether your child is at Level 1, Level 5, or any level in between, the concept your child masters is the same: learning letter sounds, combining sounds to read words, reading and understanding those words in sentences, and reading and understanding books and stories all through the medium of the computer. Phonicfriend's loveable monster, Hamish, is always on hand to help and to offer tips and advice.
Phonicfriend provides a systematic, balanced approach to reading, helping your child learn, practice and master increasingly challenging material. At every stage your child builds upon the skills mastered during their previous reading session. Throughout the course, there are built-in rewards for learning to read: pictures your child can print out and colour; reading games to play with your child; lovely stories to collect and read together.
